3M Carlton Society wall of innovators

Being inducted into 3M’s Carlton Society is the company’s highest achievement for a technical employee. Only a few select individuals have been inducted into the Carlton Society in 3M’s 120+ year history.

Before our design team was asked to work on this project,157 images of Carlton Members lined the wall of one of 3M’s most storied lab building’s small auditorium. While the images were impressive, they didn’t capture the breadth of what these individuals contributed to making the world a better place.

We were tasked with creating an experience that would celebrate the inventions of the past and inspire new innovators to dream big.

I led the messaging development that would accomplish those objectives, incorporating a more inclusive approach and highlighting the history of the society’s namesake.

We developed a modern, modular concept that artfully highlights the diversity of 3M’s innovations while preserving the legacy of the Carlton program without feeling dated.

The design integrates imagery in a supporting role, inspiring quotes and each member’s contributions are highlighted, allowing for seamless updates as new honorees are added.

From the Post-it Note inventors (Art Fry and Spencer Silver) to Joe Oxman who developed many dental technologies that you probably have in your mouth today, I wrote all 157 features. I weaved in the history, pulled inspiring quotes, images of the people and the products and delivered an award-winning experience.

This graphic lives just outside of the exhibit. I wrote the message to accompany images of that year’s inductees to inspire future innovators.
